-Five years ago-
Kisara sat on a balcony with her friend, Yuki. Yuki was the only girl who didn't treat the albino as a freak, and for that she was grateful. Kisara barely left her friend's side. Yuki was herself the nerd of her school, so she had nothing to lose for being with a girl everyone hated.
"You know, you won't get far like that," Yuki said matter-of-factly, breaking Kisara out of her thoughtful daze.
"Like what?" she asked, puzzled.
"Being pale and all. Guys won't like that, and you can be sure no one's gonna hire someone like you. You've gotta try to kiss up to someone. Maybe one of those Turbo duelists. If they help you out, you might be able to eke out a living."
Kisara was silent for a moment. "You really think so? I've got nothing to do but hope someone else helps?" Her tone grew angry. She had dreams of being special, of being rich, and of being a champion. She had deluded herself with the idea that dreams come true.
"Well, yeah," her friend said, oblivious.
It was at that moment Kisara felt a rage inside her. Who was this girl to tell her what she can and can't do? Anger was something unlike her, and it scared her, but it felt so good to stop thinking. Without thought, all there was to do was act.
She wasn't sure what happened then. It was all a blur. The next thing she remembered her friend had been pushed off the balcony. A small pool of blood was forming beneath her. A woman below was screaming to call the police.
She didn't know what to do. She ran.
-One Month Ago, Spirit World (Dream)-
Kisara tread lightly on the forest floor. Occasionally a stone or sharp stick would scratch her feet, but she didn't care. She was running. That's all she knew. She was running. She heard a monstrous roar behind her, so she ran faster. The crashing sound behind her grew closer and closer. She turned in fear, and suddenly she was the monster. The pale woman in front of her cowered before her majestic visage. Her pure-white scales shimmered like silver in the sun; her blue eyes shining like radiant diamonds. She was about to devour the weak woman she once was, when she switched again. She felt sharp teeth impale her thin legs, and screamed as crimson specks began to dot her white dress.
She awoke in a cold sweat.
-Present Day-
She walked down the street towards nowhere in particular. When Yuki died she had been disowned and sent to an orphanage. It hadn't been long, surprisingly, before she was adopted. Some scientist family who claimed they would find a way to 'cure' her. No way. She ran again, and this time never stopped. She had reached the legal age to live alone, so she was renting an apartment paid for by her job at a card shop. It was a month ago when her life had changed. She had found a Duel Runner, Duel Disk, and deck just sitting on her couch. There was a note too, in odd handwriting: "For the Dragon". Terrified that some gang had set it up at the wrong house, she hadn't touched it at first. A few days later her curiosity got the better of her.
Now she was on her way to actually register for a tournament. What the hell was wrong with her? She wasn't going to win. She never won anything. It would be another failure for the pale freak. And yet, something compelled her to proceed, be it destiny or idiocy. She will enter, for good or ill. Besides, it's not as if things could go worse than she expected them to.
